Horse Export Internationally

For horse export, particularly internationally, there is a wide range of requirements that need to be met.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) may require a horse to be placed in quarantine for a period of at least 30 days prior to international transportation for horses that need to meet individual country requirements. Not all countries require the horse be put in quarantine prior to leaving the United States.

Since export requirements for quarantine, vaccinations and blood testing vary from country to country and frequently change, it is vital to enlist the assistance of a reputable Horse Transportation Company like World Pet Travel to assist you in completing the appropriate documentation in order to avoid problems or delays.

Some countries have additional and specific health requirements for the importation of horses to their country and only an experienced Horse Transporter would be well versed on this information. At World Pet Travel, our network of professionals can handle all the details for you, ensuring that all the country specific requirements are met.

Process for Exporting Your Horse from the United States

• First, if quarantine is required by the country you are entering, a USDA inspector must come to the place where you are boarding your horse to inspect the circumstance of which the horse will be living in during the time of quarantine.
• World Pet Travel will make arrangements with the closest USDA inspector to come to your property and inspect the facilities.
• The horse or horses must be separated from other horses during this time of quarantine.
• Your own equine veterinarian if accredited by the USDA, can examine your horse and complete the required blood work, vaccinations, and certifications required by the country of destination.
• The USDA/APHIS veterinarian for your state verifies and endorses all health documentation.
• The USDA/APHIS Port Veterinarian at port of export makes final exams and authorizes horse whether or not a horse can be loaded.

Preparing Your Horse for Export

• First thing that World Pet Travel will do is contact the country of destination to obtain their importation requirements as this varies from country to country.
• World Pet Travel will then contact the closest USDA office to arrange for one of their inspectors to come to the location where the horse is to be held prior to shipping if quarantine is required. World Pet Travel will also make all of the necessary arrangements with your equine veterinarian to meet the standards required by the importing country.
• The owners’ private equine vet will conduct the health exam; forward the required blood work and specimens to an approved laboratory. After the results of the tests have been returned to your veterinarian, a health certificate will be issued showing that the horse is in good health.
• The USDA veterinarian will receive the results of the lab tests and issue the International Health Certificate needed for the exportation of the horse. The USDA endorses the International health certificate along with the other documents necessary to move with your horse.

Important Points to Remember

• All blood testing and vaccinations can be done by your regular equine veterinarian, however the International health certificates must by signed and endorsed by a USDA/APHIS accredited veterinarian in the state where the horse is located prior to shipping.
• Complete markings and brand/tattoo of each animal, both in graphic diagram and written form, must be indicated on all health certificates.
• Horses arriving at the port of export without the proper signed and sealed documents, clearly describing the horse to be exported, will be prevented from leaving the USA by the USDA port veterinarian.

US Customs Requirements for Horse Export

This document is prepared by World Pet Travel, based on information provided by the owner/agent of the animal being prepared to be exported.
