Pet Travel Scheme Health Requirements
The Pet Travel Scheme system in the United Kingdom allows pet owners to transport their animals to and from the UK and within approved countries without having to subject them to the rigid six month quarantine normally required. Under PETS, the animal is issued a certification that declares the pet to be in good health and fit for travel.
Guidelines for Pet Travel Scheme
Microchip
Your pet must have a microchip inserted. Make sure the microchip can be read after it is implanted. The microchip must adhere to ISO standards, if not you may be required to take a microchip reader with you. Have your veterinarian check the microchip to make sure it can be read. The UK requires the pet to be micro-chipped before vaccination and the rules are inflexible in this regard. Your pet will have to be re-vaccinated if the microchip is not inserted first.
Vaccinations
Your pet’s vaccination record needs to include:
• age/birthdate • microchip number, insertion date, and location on animal • date of vaccination • vaccine manufacturer product name and batch number • due date for booster vaccination • booster vaccinations must be up to date
Blood Test
It is recommended that you wait 6 months after the rabies vaccination is given to begin the blood work required for entry into the UK. Your pet must be given a blood test that shows sufficient rabies antibodies. At the time that this blood is drawn is the date that the home quarantine begins. A certified copy of the blood test results with the microchip number and date of sample must be obtained and sent to the UK in order to obtain an import permit.
Applying for Pet Travel Scheme
Most veterinarians are familiar with the Pet Travel Scheme and will issue the Approved List for you. To apply for the certification, you need to take your pet in to see your veterinarian, along with the pet’s vaccination record, blood test results, and microchip information.
Tick and Tapeworm Treatment
When entering the UK, the certification must have all of the above information completed as well as documentation of current treatment for ticks and tapeworms. Treatment must occur not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before travel. The treatment must be given every time your pet travels to the UK.
Approved Transport Companies and Routes
Pets can only enter the UK through approved transport companies following designated routes. For more information on approved transport companies and routes contact World Pet Travel for all of the latest information.
When arranging your pet’s transportation, make sure the company and route you choose are on the Approved List. Failure to follow the guidelines will result in quarantine for your pet.
